NEW HAMPSHIRE; DEAN: 38 PERCENT KERRY: 17 PERCENT

What the hell is the Kerry Campaign going to do about this disaster? For the Kerry Camp, the excrement has splattered the air conditioning.

NEW SORTS OF READERS

We are proud to say that we've received our first hits ever from Malaysia and Croatia (random, right?). Thanks for reading all around the world.

HOWARD DEAN IS LEADING A MIDDLE CLASS UPRISING

First of all, he is expecting to raise $10.3 Million bucks in the (3-month) quarter ending in September, that would be more money than any Democrat in history except for PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON raised in 1995. There's a new Zogby poll on the New Hampshire voters expected to be released today. People are excited to be part of this campaign, there truly is a feeling that this man can take out resident Bush, and take this nation in a new direction. And I think they're right. A quote from today's Times story about Howard Dean:

"He's not running a campaign, he's running a movement," wrote Natasha C., one of four people the Dean campaign invited to chronicle the trip on their Web logs. "These are protest-size crowds, these are not politics-size crowds, and that's the critical difference."
I really can't help but be excited by this guy, I really can't. I think his website and his campaign are very intriguing, check out the sorts of words they are using to define Dean's rhetoric and his actual policy positions; they're using words like "restore," "moderate," "return," "take back," his campaign, you can tell, always keeps its eyes on the prize and takes care of the nuances, they know how to appeal to people. I think it'll be interesting when the attacks start coming through.

If you're coming from Westchester County, Fairfield County or Rockland you can take the Metro-North to Grand Central Terminal and get out and walk to Bryant Park. If you're coming from Jersey or Long Island take the NJ Transit Commuter Rail or the Long Island Railroad to Penn Station and take the 1,2,3, or 9 trains up one stop to 42nd Street Times Square, and wlak over two blocks past Broadway and Avenue of the Americas to the rally at Bryant Park.

Hope to see you there.

IMPACT OF CRIMINALIZING CITIZENS; INCARCERATION AND INEQUALITY

The first time I tried to write this post, my computer crashed, and took an abnormal amount of effort to restart, I've got the feds on my case, hacking my computer, Ashcroft wants me dead, this may be the last column I write, luckily my computer is a liberal fighter, like me, and we shall not be deterred!

But away from my paranoia... So I wrote about the staggering, ridiculously high prison population the other day. I received some flack in e-mails written by my restless conservative wacko critics whose criticisms will be exposed and slaughtered here, forever, in writing, MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHHH!!!

First of all, in addressing the high rate of incarceration in the U.S. and the racial disparity in incarceration, I am not seeking to argue against the obvious and fundamental relationship between committing crimes and going to prison, I am not arguing that criminals should not be subject to the penalties that appropriately deter and punish their conduct. I am not so asinine as to think that every person in the prison industry is a victim. And I do not think that criminals should be let off easy, especially when they cause others to suffer. My better instinct tells me to not even address wingnuts' questions, but this is a forum for debate, but I wonder, why don't you crazies ever post your criticism on the COMMENTS section for everybody to read (*cough cough* King, Hallowell, Jimmy, Birelli *cough, cough*)?

The point I want to push here is not that nobody should go to prison, it is that the law should be enforced everywhere. There are felons in every quarter of society. I grew up in a predominantly latino neighborhood, and now attend an Ivy League university, I can tell you that I know more "felons" at my university than in my old neighborhood. The cops are not going to do drug raids on an Ivy League campus. The cops will heckle a guy on a stoop in Harlem with an open 40 ounce malt liquor bottle, but won't even think of messing with a guy holding a margarita outside of an outdoor restaurant on the Upper West Side; which version of possessing an open alcoholic beverage is MORE criminal?

Premises that hold that the simple reason more blacks are in prison is because more blacks commit crimes have to ignore that after people of all races commit crimes, some are arrested, some are not.

Everything would be just peaches and cream if the The Batman were there to arrest all of the evil-doers just as they were finishing up their dirty work. Instant arrests, trials, convictions and sentences would do a wonder to limit unfairness in the system, I suggest that one of you, adversarial conservative buddies of yours truly, suit up and become BATMAN, the Dark Knight.

From point A, arrest, to point Z, parole, the reality is stacked against African-Americans in much the same way a crowd at Yankee Stadium is stacked against the evil New York Mets; in other words, as a Yankees fan, my bias against the Mets resembles in many ways the current system's bias against African-Americans, if you can believe that THAT sorta dislike is possible for people to turn on EACHOTHER rather than on a sports team.

ANYWAY!

A Northwestern University sociology assistant professor, Devah Pager, wrote last year's American Sociological Association's dissertation award, for her research, studying the affects of incarceration on employment among former inmates in Milwaukee, WI. Her research seems thorough (although I have not yet read the whole report).

According to Crooked Timber:

Pager found that blacks “are less than half as likely to receive consideration by employers relative to their white counterparts, and black non-offenders fall behind even whites with prior felony convictions.” In other words, even though being black and having served time both negatively affect one’s employment opportunities, controlling for education and skills you are better off being a white male with a felony conviction than a black male with no criminal record.
I would now welcome someone to produce the EVIDENCE that everyone who is in jail is there because they committed a crime, and that more blacks are in jail because they commit crimes in proportion to their obscene incarceration rates. Evidence please. By the way, please read the Crooked Timber post on this. More to come.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Hey friends, I'm changing venues, its back to school, and all that that'll bring. I hate moving soo much.

PUBLIC REALIZES BUSH'S DRINKING COLT 45 AND OLDE ENGLISH AFFECTING HIS DECISIONS TOO MUCH: ZOGBY POLL

Bush is polling now at 52% job approval, 48% disapproval; if the election were today, Bush would definitely get 43% the UNNAMED DEMOCRAT would get 43% too.

Imagine what's going to happen when you put the strongest Democrat from this field in front of aWol. I hope the Democrats can smell blood.

VOTING MACHINE FRAUD? A POL, SHOWS SOME INTEGRITY; FROM DWIGHT MEREDITH @ PLA

You HAVE TO go read this intensely interesting and important post from PLA. Dwight has one of the best political blogs in the Blogosphere. He writes:

After the 2000 election, Georgia decided to purchase and install new voting machines. The choice of the new system fell to Georgia’s Secretary of State, Cathy Cox. She chose the Diebold system.

Much has been written on potential problems with the Diebold system. Its source code is proprietary which makes the system a non-transparent “black box.” The Diebold system is completely computerized with no paper ballots. It leaves no audit trail. Some have argued that it is possible to hack the system and that the integrity of the vote tabulations is open to question.

Via Electrolite, I learned that Bartcop had listed two Georgia races on his "Was it Magic?” page:

****Poll by Atlanta Journal Constitution/WSB-TV of 800 likely voters on Nov. 1
For Georgia Governor
Roy Barnes (D) 51% up 11
Sonny Perdue (R) 40%

** "Official Results" from the 'Diebold Electronic Voting Machines' on Nov. 5
Roy Barnes (D) 46%
Sonny Perdue (R) 51% up 5 - that's a 16-point pro-Bush swing - was it magic?
As you can see, this post, unlike too many on this page, is going somewhere. Read the whole post by clicking the title link.
